How 5 of the world’s major currencies moved against eachother — and what that means for the used machinery business.
Over the past 12 months, the Euro for instance has taken distinctly different paths against these other world’s major currencies.
Looking at the US dollar (USD), British pound (GBP), Australian dollar (AUD) and Japanese yen (JPY), the biggest move has been against the Australian dollar. The euro has also lost ground against the US dollar and pound, while the Japanese yen has moved in the opposite direction.
To make the comparison straightforward, all exchange rates in this article are expressed as units of foreign currency per €1.
The headline numbers
| Currency | October 2025 | October 2026 | 12-month change |
| 🇺🇸 US dollar | 1.1734 | 1.1298 | -3.7% |
| 🇬🇧 British pound | 0.8726 | 0.8537 | -2.2% |
| 🇦🇺 Australian dollar | 1.7771 | 1.6255 | -8.5% |
| 🇯🇵 Japanese yen | 172.90 | 178.49 | +3.2% |
We can conclude from this that the Australian Dollar was the strongest currency over the last 12 months followed by the US Dollar, the British Pound, the Euro. The Japanese Yen was the worst performing currency in this comparison.

What the chart tells us
The Australian dollar was the biggest mover against the other currencies, while the yen was the only currency in this group where all the other currencies increased their purchasing power against.
Conclusion:
Japan became a serious option for buying machines
Australia became more interesting for selling machines.
As you can see there are more factors to look at when buying and selling machines overseas. I will keep giving regular updates on the changes in exchange rates and also when there are sudden big changes.
